Description: It may not be a Picasso, but Chesterfield Council thought that this 120-yearold painting of the town's Market Hall was well worth snapping up. The Council has agreed to buy the painting by Nottingham artist W. Smyth, for £2,500 from a London art dealer. A Council spokesman said: 'Before buying it we took professional advice. It is quite a coincidence that it should become available just when we just finished refurbishing the market hall.' The painting is proof of how a £2 million face-lift has restored the Market Hall to its original glory. It will probably be hung in the Town Hall and at exhibitions.
