Description: Primitive Methodist's were so called simply because they were reviving Wesley's Primitive ways (Wesley had said in 1790 'I still remain a primitive Methodist'). The two founders of the movement are Hugh Bourne (1772-1852), and William Clowes (1780-1851) and the first Primitive Methodist Chapel was built in 1811. Bourne's followers were also called Ranters. Primitive Methodists encouraged women evangelists and also provided many leaders of the trade union movement in the late 19th century.
