Description: Also known as Mock Beggars Hall because of the realistic look of the towers when seen at dusk, this rocky outcrop can be found near Harthill Moor with a distinctive silhouette that looks like a castle. The area surrounding Robin Hood's Stride contains traces of barrows, Bronze or Iron Age enclosures and hut circles, such as the one shown here. It is one of a number of natural rock formations in the area which have stone circles built close by. The four circles on Stanton Moor, built in the vicinity of the Cork Stone, and Doll Tor circle built near the Oundel Stone being other examples. Unlike those two, Robin Hood's Stride is a dominant horizon feature for its neighbouring stone circle, Nine Stones Close. It has been suggested that there are alignments present between the stones of Nine Stones Close, and the pinnacles of Robin Hood's Stride (the name of which refers to an ancient reference to the Green Man, or Herne the Hunter, a pagan deity from ancient times rather than The Sheriff of Nottingham's adversary).
