Description: Maypole dancing on an area of parkland that lay to the east of Station Approach and to the north of Spring Gardens, a site later occupied by the Spring Gardens Shopping Centre.
In the background of this view, which is looking north-east, the Midland Railway's Buxton engine shed can be seen. The shed itself, with its hipped roof, is depicted here as extended in 1884, while the gabled building to its left is the coaling stage, and to the left of that is the MR goods shed. The MR's passenger terminus is just out of shot beyond these. To the right the viaduct taking the London & North Western Railway's Buxton & High Peak line (Buxton-Ashbourne) over the MR's tracks is visible. This route opened in 1892.
The MR engine shed was closed in 1935 when its locomotive allocation was concentrated at the ex-LNWR depot in the town. The buildings were then demolished and the site used to build a bus garage, itself later replaced by a supermarket.
