Description: This picture shows the north west turret base of the early 2nd century Stone fort which replaced the early period timber fort. Just outside the fort beyond the wall is the site of the military bathhouse found in 1972 and excavated between 1973 and 1998 by Manchester University. This early wooden fort probably dates from the seventies of the first century AD in the course of the 'pacification' of Brigantia. The fort is 'playing card' shape and covers three and a half acres.
