Description: The original caption for this postcard reads 'Buxton Well Dressing 1912' but precisely how this fits with what is shown is unclear. The location is Buxton Cottage Hospital on London Road and the figure in front of the door is Victor Christian William Cavendish, the 9th Duke of Devonshire (1868-1938). He is being handed a key and this may signify the ceremonial opening of the Hospital for which the Duke had laid the foundation stone in June 1911.
It is worth noting that the defect across this view is on the original postcard and indicates that the glass plate negative from which it was made was broken at some point between the photo being taken and then printed. Topical postcards like this were often rushed into the shops within hours of the event portrayed having occurred and there would have been no time to try to repair the damage! Under these circumstances, perhaps the publisher also got the caption wrong ...
