Description: Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) was a world famous American movie actor who made the transition from silent star to talking pictures to become the biggest 'star' of his time. He was born in Denver, Colorado, but was always something of an anglophile who loved anything British. From 1901 to 1914, Fairbanks appeared on stage in light comedies. In 1915 he began making movies, becoming the swashbuckling hero of his day in such films as The Mark of Zorro (1921), The Three Musketeers (1921), Robin Hood (1922), and The Thief of Bagdad (1924). He was married (1920-35) to Mary Pickford, the top female Hollywood star (who once made a film of the Derbyshire story of 'Dorothy Vernon of Hadden Hall'), and together with Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffith they formed United Artists studios. Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford visited Buxton on an evening in 1925 when the legendary Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova performed at the Opera House (which could be a different occasion to the one pictured here as the date given for this picture is 1924).
