Description: Alfreton Hall was built for George Morewood in 1724 by Francis Smith of Warwick. The Palmer Morewood family lived at the Hall until 1957.
The west wing suffered subsidence caused by severe coal mining and was demolished in 1968, it originally held the hall's ballroom and 25 other rooms. What remains is the East wing (1892), which is a grade II listed building.
The remainder was sold to Derbyshire County Council for £28,000 pounds and was a DCC Adult Education Centre until it moved to new premises November 2005. There are plans to turn it into a hotel/conference centre.
The lake eventually became the lido which has now been demolished. Rhododendron Sunday was the only day of the year when people were admitted to the grounds, allowed around the greenhouses and could sample the grapes. The pavilion was used as a cafe for the lido and then as a gym. There was also a paddling pool between the lake and the hall.
