Description: Robert Watchorn, a local pit boy who worked at Shirland Colliery until aged 22; became a Commissioner for Immigration at Ellis Island, New York, USA. He returned to Alfreton and carried out many improvements to the town. He died in 1944 in California. The Church, which stands in King Street, is by F S Antliffe and Sons of Draycott (1929) and is in a fanciful Gothic style. By 1939, he had not only built the church and manse, but also a school, houses, a library, a garden of rest and a children's pleasure park. Since 1970 the church has suffered many changes due to road improvements, but it is still there.
