Description: The Railway Hotel stands on the site of Thomas Painters Farm Shop and Public House which was demolished in 1899.
The Railway Inn was built in 1901 in preparation for the planned 'Electric Tram Railway' from Nottingham to Mansfield via Ripley, Alfreton and Sutton-in-Ashfield. This planned tramway eventually terminated at Ripley because the local Council would not support the scheme. Please note:- the very first 'Railway Inn' stood adjacent to the later built 'Station Hotel' in Mansfield Road, across from the bottom of Prospect Street.
