Description: The Railway Hotel stands on the site of Thomas Painters Farm Shop and Public House which was demolished in 1899. The Railway Hotel was built in 1901. It's thought that the Railway Hotel in King Street was built when it was proposed to extend the tramway (which at that time ran from Nottingham and terminated at Ripley), all the way to Mansfield via Alfreton, South Normanton and Sutton-in-Ashfield, hence the fact that the hotel was named the Railway Hotel, but the scheme apparently was shelved because of the colossal cost involved.
