Description: Shows plaque of J Flamsteed born Denby 1646, died 1719. The founder of the Greenwich observatory & 1st astronomer of England. He taught himself astronomy after poor health meant he had to leave school aged 14. The Royal Greenwich Observatory was established in 1675 for which he pushed the Royal Society. The following year he was appointed director & given his title ' astronomer Royal'. The school he attended was 'Denby Free School'. The illness he had was chronic rehumatics
