Description: Working on a similar principle to a funfair 'big wheel', 20 cars could be accommodated in a space normally covered by 2 cars (article in Company Magazine 'Ad Rem' kept at Ripley library). The bevel gears for the car lift were cut at a small engineering company called Cornish Engineering, Popham Street, Nottingham. Cornish Engineering are still in business today making gears up to 59 inches diameter.
The heavy duty chain used on the car lift was produced by Ewart Chainbelt Co. Ltd. of Colombo Street, Derby. The company still makes roller chain today using power presses built by the Butterly Co. and these same presses also made the chain for Butterly's car lift.
