Founded in July 1860, Codnor Old Prize Band was for many years the only source of entertainment (apart from the annual wakes) in Codnor, and right royally they enlivened the village with their stirring music. The various chapels could always rely on the band on aniversary days to lead processions in the village and elsewhere. They also had a high reputation when they competed in numerous contests and won many prizes. The photograph shown was taken in 1906, when the band was at the height of its fame. Weekly practices were held at the Miner's Arms, the band-master and conductor being Mr William Eyre (not on photograph) for a number of years, sons followed fathers in joining the band, and many of their descendents still live in Codnor. The band finally merged with the Butterfly Co. Ambulance Band and later with the band connected with N.C.E
