Description: Similar in design to the 'Butterley Patent' steel wagon bodies, this shows a container which would have been loaded onto a railway wagon. In this picture, it is resting on two wooden 'trucks' for use in the works to move items about. The container has two removable cross members, which have three purposes: they prevent the sides being crushed inwards when being lifted by crane; the forks on the ends locate the crane slings, preventing them from sliding should the load not be central which might make it tilt when lifted; and there are curved bars on the tops which support the tarpauliin if the container is sheeted (covered) (information supplied by Barry Parks).
