Description: Her husband, Joseph, came from Duffield. The hole in the gravestone was made by the second wife of Joseph. She must have been very fed up with her husband's continued devotion to his dead wife because she blew the hole in the gravestone with a blunderbuss gun. The Sowter family stem back to at least 1498 in Duffield and were minor land owners, recorded in the hearth tax assessments in 1664 and in other places as having 16 perches of land (453 sq yards).
