Description: In 1957, three Roman pottery kilns were discovered here. These kilns are thought to have produced 'Derbyshire Ware' pottery. Derbyshire Ware is extremely hard, gritty pottery with a pimply surface and varies in colour from buff, through brick-red to dark blue-grey or purple. This pottery was produced and distributed across central and northern Britain and the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Some pitchers found dated back to AD260. This picture shows some of the pitchers unearthed.
