About this image
The original caption is titled 'The Storm' and reads: 'High Peak Hunt today (Newhaven) on Minninglow Moorland in Storm.'
The location is clearly on a 'green road' but exactly where is not known. Newhaven was probably where the Hunt met, but this is some distance from Minninglow and there are many such remote byways lying in-between. Pikehall has therefore been selected as a generic location but this is not necessarily very accurate.
The date is also unclear but the photographer's stamp on the back of the print simply describes him as a 'Journalist'; seemingly later stamps identify him rather more grandly as a 'Photographic Journalist' and as a purveyor of 'Sheffield & District News Pictures', which might suggest this is one of his earlier productions, hence the 1930s dating.
The High Peak Hunt was formed in 1848 by a Mr Thornhill of Stanton-in-the-Peak - its territory covers the Peakland country between Bakewell, Buxton and Ashbourne.
