Description: The Bingham Fountain (seen left of centre on this photograph) was erected by the builder George Rowe; his brother; a Mr Weston; a Mr Hitchin and other working colleagues in the early 1920's on the corner of Bingham's land abutting High Street and the newly built Limes Avenue. According to George Rowe, it was erected on a circle of pennies minted for that particular year. Mr Melvyn Watson (an auctioneer) who had business premises down King Street carried out the unveiling ceremony of the fountain which was to perpetuate the memory of Doctor John Joseph Bingham in recognition of many years in practice. Doctor John Joseph Bingham had 50 years in practise from 1860-1910 and died aged 66. Doctor Sidney (0.....?) Bingham had 51 years in practise from 1900-1951, he died aged 77. Doctor Sidney (G.....?) Bingham had 48 years in practise 1910-1958 and died aged 75.
The fountain was moved to the entrance of the Miner's Welfare at the junction of Grange Street with Alma Street during July 1931 and was moved again during the summer of 1998 to the corner of Chapel Street and High Street.
