Description: Can anyone identify the location of this stalagmite? Poole's Cavern at Buxton is a possibility, although a limestone cave at Cauldon Low in Staffordshire has also been suggested. This cavern was opened to the public in 1905 but destroyed by quarrying just two years later. If Cauldon is correct this would suggest the 1930s date attributed to this view is wrong, although it may in fact relate to when the lantern slide (from which our image was obtained) was created by copying an earlier picture.
Stalagmites are defined as 'a type of speleothem that rises from the floor of a limestone cave due to the dripping of mineralized solutions and the deposition of calcium carbonate.'
