Description: Second (but first surviving) son of Francis Burdett (1743û1794), country gentleman, and his wife, Eleanor.
He succeeded his grandfather Sir Robert Burdett (1716û1797) as fifth baronet on 13 February 1797, inheriting estates at Foremark and Bramcote, Warwickshire.
The Burdetts were an old midlands parliamentary family, lately tory, who had lived in England since 1066.
Married Sophia Coutts on 5 August 1793, the youngest daughter and coheir of the London banker Thomas Coutts (1735û1822); they had six children. He possibly also fathered an additional one or two from an affair with Lady Oxford (Jane Elizabeth Harley).
This image is one of a collection by the famous local antiquarian, Thomas Bateman, of Middleton by Youlgreave. (1821-1861). Bateman organized his collection by inserting them into a 4 volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, creating a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county. The purchase of the collection for Derbyshire Libraries was made possible by the generous bequest of Miss Frances Webb of Whaley Bridge, well known local historian, who died in December 2006.
