Description: A Holy Trinity Church parade (possibly at Whitsuntide) proceeding along Liversage Street towards London Road (on which Holy Trinity Church was located) in the mid-1950s. The photographer is standing on the corner of Hope Street and is looking north-east - in the background the intersection between Liversage Street and Park Street can be picked out. As can be seen Hope Street was one-way, travelling eastwards from Traffic Street.
This was part of the Castlefields area of Derby, lying between the town centre and Litchurch. The gridiron of streets lined with terraced houses was largely cleared in the late 1960s and early 'seventies, the location being given over in the main to industrial units and car parks. However, from 2013 a 20-year £100 million regeneration project for the area - now re-styled as Castleward - was commenced involving 800 new homes, 35,000 square feet of commercial retail space, a primary school and community spaces.
This photograph is from a collection relating to the ministry of the Reverend H E Brown, who was at Openwoodgate 1951-53, Holy Trinity Derby 1953-56, Dove Holes 1956-58, and Matlock Bath 1958-66.
Website contributor Mr T Wigley comments: 'I lived in Hope Street between 1957 and 1968 and used to buy sweets from the shop on the corner indicated by the 'Brooke Bond Tea' sign on the wall.'
