Description: Taken in the play ground at Clay Cross Senior Boys school by a Derbyshire Times reporter on the steps of the wooden class rooms in 1961.
The school was moving into a new venture; taking a school trip abroad, to Belgium. The company used was "SOS" and some of the boys seen here are wearing the badge that they had to wear whilst travelling.
The teachers that would be travelling to Belgium: Mr Hoggard (known as 'Titch') is the one with moustache and tie. Mr Johnson (Woodwork teacher) is the one with his hands clasped. Mr Crooks (School Headmaster, known as Batman) is the one stood furthest from the camera.
The boys: top left, next to Mr Hoggard is Stewart Shimwell. His father was an ex professional footballer and who at that time was the landlord of The Royal Volunteer Public house in Clay Cross.
Front row nearest the camera is one of two Atkinson brothers in the picture.
Looking over his right shoulder, bold black and white tie with black hair is David Blowen. One of two Blowen brothers pictured.
Second on his left, centre of the group is Peter Lander. Behind him, with tall hair is the other Atkinson brother.
Top row far end, fair hair with parting on his left, is Glyn Pickering, he is looking over the left shoulder of Howard Blowen, who is looking over the left shoulder of, David Lester, who is wearing the double breasted blazer with one button undone.
The boy on the back row 2nd left wearing a jacket and jumper over his shirt and tie with blonde hair was Keith Walker. (Additional information kindly supplied by Sarah Mycroft).
