Description: Bakewell is an old market town. Monday has been market day since at least 1330. The town has a wide range of shops, pubs, restaurants and of course it is the home of the famous Bakewell Pudding.
This is looking across Granby Croft towards the Methodist Chapel on Matlock Street, taken from the top of the Recreation Ground. It was possibly painted from Smith's Island, though the artist appears to be standing in the River Wye! At that time there were allotments at Granby Croft; since then housing has blocked the view of the Methodist Chapel. The old buildings on the right were on what became the market place, but is now housing. (Additional information very kindly supplied by Janice Mather).
