Description: See http://www.crepello.demon.co.uk/willington/PowerStn.htm for an excellent brief account of the history of Willington Power Station. The pictures we have here show some unusual and personal photographs of the site in the 1950's. See also DCHQ000072 and ...74. and DCHQ000932 to DCHQ000944. This series of pictures inspired a web-site user, Mr Gifford, to send us the following reminiscence about the Power Station at this time:- He was an inspection engineer at the time and was asked to come onto the site to inspect a crane that, it was thought, might have a cracked pin. He turned up and said 'Right, where's this crane, then?' He nearly died when they pointed up miles above him at the crane. He said he was so frightened by the situation he literally crawled on his hands and knees to reach it and then spent all day working on it. By the time he'd done his entire head was coated in thick black grease off the crane and he was supposed to be taking his young lady out that night! Instead she spent all evening in the bathroom trying to wash the stuff out of his hair! It was definitely make or break for the relationship that night but they've been together ever since!
