The Rose Queen is a girl or young woman crowned with flowers and honoured as queen. The rose is considered the queen of flowers and the first rose queen was deemed to be Mary Rose Tudor (1496 - 1533) who was considered to be one of the most attractive women in Europe at the time. The origins however lie with the May Queen. During each May Day celebrations a beautiful young girl (or woman) was chosen for a May Queen. She was to preside over the celebrations as well as symbolise the beginning of spring's reign. Alfred, Lord Tennyson's wrote 'THE MAY QUEEN' in her honour. The Rose Queen festival is a celebration of fertility and beauty, and of the promise of love.
