Description: Looking south-southeast towards White Lion Square, the Toll Bar end of South Street. Ilkeston Corporation water cart damping down dirt. On the left is the shop of the Misses Shaw, two elderly spinsters. The shop never altered; in the 1920s and up to it's demolition it resembled the house of Miss Haversham in Dickens' 'Great Expectations'. The photograph is dated between 1903 and 1919 because tram lines are visible, and the photographer died in 1919.
