Description: Stenson Lock looking east towards Swarkestone. The photographer is standing on the stern of hire boat 'The Stenson Bubble' (see DCCS001263). Stenson Lock is No 6 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, which runs for 93.5 miles (150.5 km) from the River Trent at Derwent Mouth near Shardlow (Derbyshire) to Preston Brook in Cheshire (where it links with the Bridgwater Canal). It was engineered by James Brindley and opened in 1777. In this view there is a boat in the lock, which with a drop of 12ft 6in, is the second deepest on the Canal.
