Description: Situated on the corner of High Street and Chapel Street, number 2 High Street. The image was taken for Hampson Brothers. The business was owned by John Liddell the Chemist, who moved into number 2 as a single man and newly qualified chemist at some point before the 1911 census. When he married in June 1911, his wife joined him from Falkirk. The shop looks closed and without a display in the window in the above image, which suggests it was probably taken during the First World War, when John was away in the Sherwood Foresters Volunteers Regiment. When John returned from the war, he re-opened his business at number 2 and brought his wife and son back from Scotland. When he had grown the business somehat he moved to number 1. in the mid 1920s he commisioned a refit (see PTPD000799 and PTPD000800). John Liddell died in 1929.
