Description: The plaque, situated on the bridlepath to Smalley, is of John Flamsteed, born Denby 1646, died 1719. The founder of the Greenwich observatory & 1st astronomer of England. He taught himself astronomy after poor health, chronic rheumatics, meant he had to leave Denby Free School aged 14. The Royal Greenwich Observatory was established in 1675 for which he pushed the Royal Society. The following year he was appointed director & given his title ' Astronomer Royal'.
