About this image
Rowtor Rocks is a gritstone outcrop shrouded in woodland and located to the rear of the Druid Inn in Birchover. The Rocks comprise a distinctive collection of natural and manmade features, many being carved to include a number of alcoves, steps, rooms, caves and benches. This is believed to have been the work of Thomas Eyre who lived at Rowtor Hall during the 17th century.
Additionally, there are various examples of prehistoric rock art, a total of five ancient carvings having been discovered on the western end of the outcrop.
The lady standing in front of one of the formations in this view is the photographer's wife, Doris Brindley.
