About this image
A man in a boat within Speedwell Cavern.
The photographer's original caption reads 'The Entrance to 'Speedwell' Canal, Castleton. This is 100 feet below ground at bottom of long flight of stone steps. It is over half mile long to where the public are taken in boats.'
The 'canal' is a flooded adit (in other words a horizontal level) created by lead miners and leading to the Cavern itself.
The date of this image is uncertain and could be early 1900s from the dress of the figure in the boat. However, the photographer's stamp on the rear of the original print is one he is known to have used in the 1930s.
