About this image
An Automobile Association patrolman digging a pathway to one of its dedicated phoneboxes opposite The Fox House Inn on Hathersage Road after a heavy fall of snow. Note the can seemingly providing water for dogs.
The ownership of the box is in no doubt with at least three and probably four examples of the AA's iconic monogram in evidence, together with the name of the location. The large sign facing the camera reads 'TELEPHONE & FIRE EXTINGUISHER AVAILABLE DAY & NIGHT BY USE OF AA MEMBERS KEY AREA HQ PRINCESS ST MANCHESTER PHONE CENTRAL 7287 TEL[EGRAPH] FANUM MANCHESTER.' This is a reminder that joining the AA included being issued with a special key to access such boxes, something that continued until at least the 1980s.
The photographer's original caption for this image read 'The Heavy Fall in Derbyshire. Snap today at Fox House Moors, 7 miles from Sheffield.'
