About this image
View looking north-east. This was the site of a small castle from the 12th century, acquired by Ralph, Lord Cromwell in 1429 and enlarged into a double-courtyard 'palace' up until his death in 1456, when it passed to the Earls of Shrewsbury. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1569, 1584 and 1585.
