About this image
Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield (1694 - 1773) was buried at Shelford. He resided at Bretby Park, the grounds of the park were laid out by the 2nd Earl of Chesterfield around his 17th century manor house. This house was later demolished and an early 19th century mansion was built by the 5th Earl in its place (built in 1812 to a design by Sir Jeffry Wyatville). Later, by marriage, the Hall passed into the family of the Earls of Carnarvon. see DCHQ003099 and DCSD000150 for views of the house).
This image is one of a collection by the famous local antiquarian, Thomas Bateman, of Middleton by Youlgreave. (1821-1861). Bateman organized his collection by inserting them into a 4 volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, creating a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county. The purchase of the collection for Derbyshire Libraries was made possible by the generous bequest of Miss Frances Webb of Whaley Bridge, well known local historian, who died in December 2006.
