V J Day celebrations, Vale Street, off Pear Tree Road, Normanton, Derby, 1945

About this image
Looking down on children enjoying a celebration tea party for VJ day August 1945. Notice the brick and concrete structure over the 'cellar grate' (the place where the coalman emptied his sacks of coal into the cellar). When 'air raid' sirens sounded everyone moved to the cellar and waited for the 'all clear' siren to sound. The purpose of the structure was (hopefully) to stop any blockage of the grate in the event of a German bomb landing on the house, but appears to be more use as a place to sit and have a 'good old chinwag' (conversation).
Vale Street no longer exists - there is now a playing field here, off Roe Walk.
