About this image
A children's street party to celebrate VJ day (surrender of Japan). End of World War 2 - 2nd August 1945.
Local shops gave goods and adults baked cakes, sandwiches, jellies, trifles etc. After the party the tables were put on the pavements and gramophones (music players) put at each end of the street, one for the older generation and one for for the teenagers at the other. Large amounts of beer and spirits appeared, more food, cooked meat, bangers and mash and hot meat pies and the celebrations continued until midnight, when a toast to the King and Queen and 'All Absent Friends' was made and the National Anthem sung.
Vale Street no longer exists - there is now a playing field here, off Roe Walk.
