About this image
No.5 and No.6 Pits, situated at Morton c 1910. No.5 Pit commenced sinking about June 1863 and by August 1865 the Blackshale Coal was reached at a depth of 300 yards. The No.6 Pit was sunk to the Hard Coal seam in June 1874 and cost about £18,000 to sink and about 100 men and officials celebrated the winning of the coal at the Station Hotel, Morton. These pits closed in 1964.
