About this image
No.9 and No.11 Pits, referred to the Avenue Pits, were situated on the Wingerworth Estate. The No.9 Pit appears to have commenced sinking about January 1880 and the Blackshale was reached at a depth of 235 yards in March 1881. A No.10 Pit was contemplated but never sunk. No.11 pit was actually sunk in 1850s by Wingerworth Colliery company and purchased by the CXC in 1857. It was put into 'mothballs' until the 1880s.
