About this image
From David Birt's book 'Steaming Through the 1980s; Steam Resurrected in and around Derby':
A4 Pacific locomotive 4468 Mallard has uncoupled from its train from Sheffield for watering and coaling in Derby's 'Dock' prior to leaving on the second leg of the special 'The South Yorkshire Pullman' to London Marylebone; surrounded by an atmosphere of railway enthusiasts.
The Mallard steamed to fame in 1938, hitting a 126 mph peak between Grantham and Peterborough - the fastest speed ever achieved by a steam locomotive in the world.
Note olf signal box, footbridge and loco works to the right of the picture.
