About this image
One of a pair of photographs of an unknown lace factory (see also DCHQ006425). The man is posed with one of the typical reference books for a lace manufacturing company. The loose sheets on the wall would have been 'rubbings' of lace, and the book full of actual samples. (Nottingham City Museum's Costume Collection holds examples of such books). A piece of machine lace (curtain?) is tacked behind him. Photos of lace manufacture are very rare.
