About this image
Sinfin North and Central Railway Stations closed because of:- the low level of usage of the service, the costs that would be involved in continuing to operate the railway service , and other factors relating to physical access to the stations. When passenger services were introduced on the Sinfin branch in 1976, providing useful transportation for workers at nearby factories such as Rolls Royce, the intention was that the line should be extended beyond the Sinfin industrial estate to Chellaston but the extension to Chellaston did not materialise. Railtrack had not proposed the closure of the line itself, which would continue to be used for freight services. Therefore, Rail Regulator allowed the closure of the Sinfin branch, but judged it appropriate to attach a condition to his consent which was designed to ensure that the station platforms could not be demolished without his approval for a period of ten years, which would ensure that station infrastructure existed if any party wished to re-instate passenger rail services on the Sinfin branch within that period. The passenger service ceased and the station closed on the 17th May 1993.
