About this image
The High Peak Trail follows the line of the old High Peak Railway, and forms 17.5 miles of footpath. It connects high peak Junction (near Cromford) to Dowlow (near Buxton). The railway line was opened in c 1830 to transport goods from the Cromford Canal to the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge. The Cromford Canal suffered seriously when the Butterley Tunnel collapsed in c 1900. After this time the canal was severed in several places and now water only remains in the Cromford to Ambergate section.
