Litton Mill, near Miller's Dale
early 20th century
About this image
Litton Mill (not to be confused with Litton which is some distance away) grew up around the cotton mill founded in 1782. The mill had an infamous history of mistreatment of its young apprentices, many of whom died due to long hours, meagre food, cramped accommodation, beatings and general abuse by the owners of the mill, especially when under the cruel direction of Ellis Needham & Co. The Needham Family had to send the bodies to other parishes for burial so the local authorities wouldn't get alarmed by the number of fatalities. It is now still standing by the River Wye, and converted into dwellings.
