About this image
At 300 metres above sea level, Buxton claims to be the highest market town in England. The Market Place is in the old town and is dominated by the Town Hall. The Market Place in Higher Buxton has been the home of Buxton Market since 1813, and probably before. This view, taken from the roof of the Town Hall looking towards Scarsdale Place and Dale Road, shows Solomons Temple in the distance. The top of Grin Low is capped by Solomon's Temple, a folly built in 1895 by public subscription. It is a great place to see the area from due to it being at an altitude of 1,440 feet . This victorian folly stands on the site of a Bronze age burial mound or tumulus. (Information from www.derbyphotos.co.uk)
