About this image
Textile firm W Ball and Son Ltd's long-established Albion Works looking north-west from Burr Lane. The main four-storey section with the pediment dates from 1848, while the two-storey extension - with the sign reading Baltex Fabrics - is somewhat later.
W Ball and Son can trace its origins back to the 1820s, won a gold medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and by the early 21st century was said to be 'the oldest existing warp-knitting company in the world'. In 2014 they were engaged in the manufacture of technical fabrics for aerospace, healthcare and military purposes, together with 3D spacer fabrics intended to supplant foam and neoprene products.
