About this image
The Heathcotes are a long established and influential family of Chesterfield. Gilbert Heathcote became the founder of the bank of England in 1694 and its governor in 1709 and Lord Mayor of London in 1711. When he died in 1733 he was the richest man in England with a fortune of £700,000. His brother Caleb emigrated to America in 1691 and bought land including what is now Long Island's Scarsdale District. He founded New York's Trinity Church and was elected Mayor of New York in 1711. Josiah Heathcote made a fortune in the West Indies and became Lord Mayor of London in 1742. The Heathcote family wealth was mainly gained from mollasses, spices and silks. This view shows the interior of a ground floor room to the left of the hall. See also DCCC001139, DCCC001140, DCCC001141, DCCC001142, DCCC001143 and DCCC001144.
