About this image
The series of slides from DCAV003038 to 3070, covers the stretch of the River Derwent from Cockpit Lane to Town Street Bridge during the renovation of the Ecclesbourne Flood scheme in the mid-1970s. The initial work consisted of removing the old stone bridge in Cockpit Lane and replacing it with a concrete bridge some ten feet higher. It also required the removal of all the undergrowth on the river banks and clearing away other obstructions. Steel piles were driven in to form the banks and concrete walls were erected where required.
DCAV003065 to DCAV003070 show the cutting of a new channel, to make a steady curve by the tennis courts which replaced the sharpe right-hand bend in front of Duffield Court.
