About this image
Born at Marehay, he worked in Whiteley collliery before he was 13. Played in several local teams before joining The Pompey Team in Portsmouth in 1919, and quickley made his mark as a goal scorer transferred to Sheffireld Wednesday in 1924 and in 1930 made his debut for England against Scotland at Wembley. He was a dominant figure in international soccer for 4 years, and while he was captain for Sheffield Wednesday won the league championship twice, the FA Cup, and in seven seasons in the first division were out of the top three only once. He died 3/Oct/1978 at the age of 78
