About this image
Founded at Ripley, north of Derby, in 1790, Butterley was for many years the largest coal, iron and engineering concern in the East Midlands. It was founded by William Jessop, Francis Beresford, John Wright and Benjamin Outram (after whom the early company was named) and began to manufacture fish-bellied cast-iron rails which marked an important advance in railway technology.
